Nemiroff, Milt

Tennis - 2001

In this 33 years as head coach of the Grant High School tennis team, Milt Nemiroff’s Lancers registered 21 league championships, and all teams went to the L.A. City playoffs.
Grant won the City championship in 1974, was runner-up three times (1966, 1967, 1971), made the semi-finals six times between 1968 and 1979, and quarterfinals fifteen times from 1969 to 1993. Under Nemiroff’s tutelage, Grant’s tennis winning percentage was 83.8 percent. When he retired in 1995, the tennis area at Grant was named The Nemiroff Tennis Center.

Nemiroff began his teaching career at Van Nuys High School in 1957, moving to the new Grant High in 1959, where he initially coached cross country for one semester. He began coaching Lancers tennis in 1960, adding varsity football to his duties from 1963 to 1975. He took on cross-country again in 1976, which he continued to coach, along with tennis, until his retirement.

Milt was born in Chicago, moving to Los Angeles at age 13. The Fairfax High, UCLA and Cal Lutheran graduate was Athletic/Physical Education Department chairperson at Grant for 25 years. In 1964, he was selected to participate in a Lifetime Sports Committee conference in Washington, D.C., representing the City of Los Angeles in tennis. In 1992, he was named the Outstanding Educator in Senior High Physical Education by the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Nemiroff conducted summer tennis clinics throughout the L.A. Unified School District for 17 years, sponsored by Youth Services.
